What is ASSET?

ASSET is a self-supported department of Eight/KAET public television located at Arizona State University. This organization is supported by a membership structure, as well as grants, and corporate donations. ASSET takes great pride in collaborating with business and non-profit organizations to bring the best possible resources to Arizona educators, families, and the community.

Core Programs

Our three major core programs include:

  1. Implementing Early Childhood Education Services: This portfolio of early childhood education services designed to improve children's kindergarten readiness for school in Arizona. These services include 21st Century resources and strategies to reach Arizona's youngest learners and their first teachers including parents, caregivers, and preschool educators. Eight Educational Outreach impacts young readers with research and standards-based, interactive, multimedia content. Parents, caregivers, and preschool educators are provided opportunities to improve their skills in child development and literacy through online courses and a train the trainer model for delivering early childhood curriculum related to the daily broadcasts, "A Place of Our Own/Los Niņos en Su Casa" and "Sid the Science Kid."
  2. Developing and Distributing PBS and other locally created PreK-20 Curricular Resources & Professional Development Services: This library of PreK-20 curricular resources, aligned to Arizona Academic and Early Learning Standards, and customized for Arizona classrooms. ASSET's professional development resources are composed of products and services designed to help educators enhance their understanding of how to effectively integrate technology, and support their development as highly qualified professionals. Educators and districts select from a library of over 150 online courses that can be customized to meet district/school goals. Districts may choose to use the Peer Connection tool to support coaching and mentor programs.
  3. Fostering Community Partnerships & Supporting Community Needs: Eight Educational Outreach has the ability to apply a variety of multimedia tools to better connect and communicate public messages to niche markets across the state. Through targeted messaging to educators, ASSET can help disseminate information and points of contact for resources into high need communities. Using proven experience in constructing professional development and training for adult learners, Eight Educational Outreach can provide consultation and support for putting content into train the trainer face to face and online formats. Educational Outreach also can connect to other broadcast, print and online capabilities from Eight.

Our Background

Since 1983, ASSET-Arizona School Services through Educational Technology as the educational outreach department for Eight/Arizona Public Television, has helped Arizona PreK-12 educators integrate technology into their classrooms. Initially, ASSET distributed instructional video and supporting face to face professional development statewide. ASSET services for educators have evolved through the years to meet the changing needs of Arizona's classrooms.

ASSET was one of the pioneers in Arizona for offering online professional development for educator continuing education credits. In 2002 ASSET began offering online classes customized for Arizona educators through a portal environment. Many of these courses were provided through PBS Teacherline or created in collaboration with Arizona educators. All courses were facilitated by a cadre of highly trained and qualified Arizona online facilitators. In 2005, the Arizona Department of Education recognized ASSET's successful deployment of these services to over half of the schools and districts in the state and an agreement between ASSET and the ADE was reached to serve the entire state. In 2008 the ADE adopted a similar model for its own delivery of online services in the IDEAL environment.

Today, ASSET provides research-based professional development and curricular resources aligned to Arizona Academic Standards for Arizona educators. Eight's educational outreach department supports educators in leveraging PBS programming to impact student school readiness and student achievement. In addition, ASSET is the Arizona distributor for PBS TeacherLine courses and the PBS Peer Connection coaching tool.

Eight's educational outreach department implements a number of programs including Ready to Learn, “A Place of Our Own", and the Early Childhood Project provided by Qwest. The Classroom Innovator program enables ASSET to extend its reach through classroom liaisons that raise awareness of PBS programs and multimedia resources within their school community.
