National Education Association & WGBH Between the Lions (PreK-2) (Click to show description)
Since its premiere on PBS, "Between the Lions" has quickly become a favorite of kids, parents, caregivers, and teachers. The National Education Association (NEA) endorsed the series. According to Bob Chase, NEA President, "We strongly urge parents and caregivers to guide young children to "Between the Lions" and invite teachers to take advantage of the program and Web site for top-notch (resources) that extend learning." In this session we will learn how this fun, innovative and creative program can enhance any literacy program. Its lively songs, humor, and unforgettable characters are a valuable aid for helping children to learn – and love – reading.

Explore the exciting multimedia resources offered for all readers in grades 1-3 from PBS programs R U There? and the new Electric Company. These programs include a wide variety of resources designed to help students with decoding, vocabulary development, comprehension, word morphology and motivation. You will be introduced to hard copy and digital resources such as Teacher Guides for classroom activities, student comic books and magazines, broadcast and streamed program episodes, and interactive online environments. Session participants will walk away with class sets of resources ready for implementation.

THIRTEEN: MISSION US! (5-8) Parts I & II (Click to show description)
THIRTEEN Outreach, New York PBS, is here to conduct a special teacher workshop as part today’s Institute! Dive headfirst into MISSION US – a FREE online video game set in different eras in American history. The first mission, "For Crown or Colony?" focuses on events leading to the American Revolution. In the game as a player you take on the role of Nat Wheeler, a 14-year-old who leaves his family’s farm in 1770 to become an apprentice to a Boston printer, Benjamin Edes. The two part session allows participants time to explore the game and have time to discuss the learning theory, research and design structure behind the scenes.

PBS takes an in-depth look at issues of equity in the United States through the Raising Hope: The Equal Voice Story documentary. Issues covered in this session include: Immigration, access to a quality education, healthcare, living wages and job access. Workshop participants will learn about the resources available and how film clips can be used to enhance Social Studies lesson plans.
